vision through the fog of absent mindedness

It starts with a fog. A sort of blur where you can just begin to see glimpses of light and dark. Those movements become soft silhouettes, shifting in the back of your mind – still just out of reach. It is what happens when we are out of the practice of being present. We see something, but it’s too out of focus to become a concept we can grasp.

We are too distracted; we are too overwhelmed.

We try harder. Concentrating on the moving figures, trying to imagine what is behind our eyes – imagining what we want it to be. Creativity steps in.

We begin to fill in the blanks. Making assumptions from the abstract shapes now taking form. They start to come to life.

Figures dancing, wind blowing. We begin to feel that moment, placing ourselves in a realm all but forgotten.

The more we seek, the more we see. And the deeper we look, we discover layers and layers within and without. Until, at last the picture starts to become clear.

Then, like a hurricane broken loose from the skies, it returns. Inspiration. Vision.

As if the sludge has been wiped away from our weary eyes, suddenly we see again. Universes unimaginable. Creatures, places and worlds that were once so real, become real again.

They say imagination and dreams are for the youth. I say, it’s for those who aren’t blinded by practicality and burdens of life. For the things we dream are things themselves. And without them, we are less of ourselves.

The dream is real. And the world is without limits. Take time to be present. Feel the world around you. And make it what you would have it be, a day in your dreams.

The Art: An artist’s depiction of vision through a fog of absent mindedness.

VISION

1/15/22

Only by being present, can we truly see. The more we seek, the more we see. And the deeper we look, we discover layers and layers within and without. Until, at last the picture starts to become clear. Inspired by God’s unfathomable creation.

“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” – Genesis 1:31

the best of winter fashion essentials

Wide leg trousers, sweater vests, utility boots – some are quick to grab up some of the biggest fall and winter trends before the season begins. Then the snow comes. The cold sets in, and we gravitate towards the pieces that not only preserve a thread of what makes us feel like “us”, but also the pieces that work functionally into our everyday lifestyles.

It’s mid January. There’s plenty of winter left, but it’s been long enough for us to establish just what is essential in our winter wardrobes.

As such, here is the best of winter. A collection of pieces that are not only on trend, but ones that have proven themselves throughout the season to be wardrobe essentials.

Wide leg pants

For you lovers of skinny jeans, I’m sorry. This year, the vote is in and wide leg trousers are the pant of choice. In the minimalist fashion world, they’ve been well embraced for more than a couple of seasons. This season, they’ve made it to mainstream. If you don’t feel quite right rocking this menswear inspired trend, opt for a more fitted top to shift the focus of a flattering form that you’re more used to getting with a fitted pant.

The oversized blazer

Girl, if you still haven’t gotten one, I’m not sure what lightning you’re waiting for. An oversized blazer is a warm layer that makes any ensemble a bit more sophisticated. Say hello to making tees and leggings appropriate for the office. Working an 8-5 in the fashion world, this is a piece I wear 2-4 times a week, and well worth investing in a luxury quality style that you’ll be able to wear years to come.

Leather leggings

A favorite for a few seasons, there are so many reasons you need a pair of leather leggings in your wardrobe. The outfit ideas for leather leggings are truly endless, and they satisfy both categories of comfort and sex appeal. Is there any more winning combo than that? I’ve found mine on repeat every week.

Utility boots

We’ve now seen a few days of snow on the East coast. Utility boots are not only the most iconic silhouette for footwear this season – they’re also highly practical during winter weather. If you haven’t purchased a pair, go ahead and treat yourself. The good news is, they’re forecasted to continue well through the next few seasons.

The leather shacket

Leather jackets are always a wardrobe staple. This season, the boxy sister is queen with an oversized fit and utility pockets. Like a blazer, this piece is a great layering piece for winter style, and the leather gives your look a bit of edge. I’ve had my favorites in my capsule wardrobe, and they’re getting a workout this season.

A baseball cap

Hide yesterday’s hair and keep warm with the athleisure accessory of the season, a baseball cap. Good news is, you can keep wearing this winter essential through spring.

With these wardrobe staples, you can freshen up just about any combo in your winter wardrobe. Need a few more essentials? These 8 must have fall fashion essentials are still going strong through the winter season.

why you need leather leggings in your wardrobe

Less isn’t always more, but in the case of those seeking to reduce to a capsule wardrobe, keeping pieces that count is key.

One of the most versatile pieces that you’re not going to want to skip out on – leather leggings. If you don’t already have a pair or two in your wardrobe, be prepared to be convinced otherwise. If you do, here are a few perks you may not have thought of, and a few tips on integrating them into your wardrobe.

Leather leggings go with everything

From super casual ensembles like sweatshirts and tees to sexy evening attire in bodysuits and heels – leather leggings go with (literally) everything.

If you’re trying to reduce space in your wardrobe or packing for a trip, leather leggings are a must, with tons of leather legging outfit ideas to wear all season round.

Leather leggings are easy to pack

If a destination is on your horizon, leather leggings are also super easy to pack, and take much less space in your luggage than your vintage denim or wide leg trousers. Just fold and roll.

You can style leather leggings for any occasion

Because you can style so many different types of outfits with leather leggings, the occasions are equally endless. Wear a pair with an oversized shacket and boots for your next outdoor adventure, or for girls night at your favorite wine bar.

Leather leggings are surprisingly comfortable

Despite what one might think looking at the skintight, mid to high gloss pants alternative… leather leggings are surprisingly comfortable. Look for a pair that has high stretch and a soft lining if you want extra breathability.

Nothing says effortlessly sexy like leather leggings

The forming fit, the familiar casual silhouette – there’s just something that screams effortlessly sexy. If you want to add a little “mmm” factor in your day, it’s the right time to get into a leather leggings outfit.

Tips for styling leather leggings

Looking for leather legging outfit ideas?

Who What Wear shares a half dozen outfit ideas on what to try with your favorite legging trend. A few styling tips to stay on this year’s trends:

  • Wear your leather leggings with a sweater vest (because sweater vests should be in everyone’s wardrobe by now)
  • Go leather on leather for a look that’s edgy and sexy
  • Pair with an oversized sweatshirt for a look that says, I’m sexy… but not trying
  • Wear leather leggings with a shacket and sneakers as one of this year’s hottest combos
  • Pair your leather leggings with a blazer for office to cocktails
  • Layer on an oversized knit for a look that you can wear anywhere
  • Opt for a crop if you want to emphasize your silhouette

Tips for storing and caring for your leather leggings

Treat your leather leggings with love. A heavy stack of clothes and a wire closet rack can be a death sentence for leather attire. Roll neatly in a drawer, or hanging them lightly over a hanger with plenty of space. Avoid the squish to extend your leggings lifespan.

Types of leather leggings and where to buy them

I’ve always been a huge fan of David Lerner’s leather leggings, however, they can be a little hard to track down these days. Other winners I’ve received from Commando who does a great job with leggings and bodysuits alike.

You can also grab a pair of leather leggings on Amazon for a steal – well worth the investment with the potential outfits you can create.

image cred: AMAZON

While a fitted legging is a staple, don’t forget to consider other types of leather leggings to mix up your looks. One of my most worn pairs of leather leggings is a low-rise crop. You can also find leather biker shorts, joggers, and high gloss vinyl leggings to suit your specific style.

finally a mascara worth rebuying | bite upswing mascara review

The dark, soul piercing stare broken only by the soft beating of luscious eye lashes – that natural wing from the perfect curl fanning out towards the tips of perfectly manicured eyebrows. Lashes captivate us. Mascara, not so much.

After being underwhelmed by mascara since the not-really-that great pink cover girl tube, I knew it was time to find a new love. Yet, tube after tube was thrown away in bitter disappointment.

They clumped, the made your eyelashes fall out, they left panda circles under your eyes by 5pm, or they just didn’t really do anything at all.

When Bite Beauty sent me one of their first types of Upswing full-volume mascara, I was skeptical to say the least. No doubt they are masters of lip scrubs, liners, glosses and lipsticks alike. And they’r’e made with clean, natural ingredients we can all trust.

But what does a lip beauty brand know about mascara?

Needless to say, it took me weeks before I even bothered to give it a try. But alas, after my most recent disappointment finally reached the end of its sorry life, I broke out the Bite Beauty Upswing tube that had been tossed in my “maybe later” beauty drawer.

Was I ever wrong. Bite Beauty Upswing mascara is the mascara I had been waiting for all along. They nailed it.

So what’s so great about it?

Aside from the glossy rose gold tube and tasteful packaging, there’s a lot to love about this beauty discovery.

Let’s start with the brush. The brush has a sort of hourglass shape, which made little sense to me at first. However upon applying the mascara, I found it to be quite useful in grabbing the ends of my lashes while I focused on the center connection of the brush. Genius.

One layer, beautiful. A natural, yet more than barely there layer that made my lashes pop with just a few strokes. Two layers. BAM. That full luscious set of lashes, that Lord only knows I didn’t get from birth.

No clumps. No missed coverage. And I didn’t have to brush through a million times to make sure I had coverage on each of my sparse lashes – the applicator did that for me.

So how did it last throughout the day? I work an 8am-5pm, and aside from a couple minor wipes in the office bathroom, the mascara was fairly smudge free. I’d give it a 4-star rating in this category, only because combined with my fairly oily moisturizer and complete lack of bottom eyelashes, it did shadow a bit by the end of the day.

But, with a light dab between office and cocktails, my mascara held through the rest of the night. And, unlike other mascaras, it wasn’t a beast to wash off that night, dissolving easily with warm soapy water or a cotton swap and makeup remover.

Overall not enough that I was dissuaded from use. In fact, I just purchased my second tube, which is what inspired me to write this Bite Beauty Upswing mascara review.

A great mascara is hard to find, but Bite Upswing gets a 4.8 star from me, putting it at least a few stars above my last several tubes that were beyond a waste of the plastic tubes they came in. Thanks for spreading your wings (and my lashes) Bite Beauty.

I guess you’re more than just lip masters after all.

In accordance with the FTC regulations for Influencers, this post features gifted items from Bite Beauty (though I bought the second tube myself!). All thoughts, comments and musings are made of my own opinion and honest, personal experience with the products reviewed or mentioned. I hope you’ve found this post informational and inspiring!

workwear street style with Anne Fontaine

An air of confidence, a long temperate stride. She brushes back a loose wisp of hair and lets her hand fall unassumingly down the tailored lines of her suiting. You catch a glimpse of her slightly parted lips as she glances back at the cityscape behind.

The master of street style. Editorial worthy ensembles that look somehow effortlessly draped on as if completely unthought perfection could be truly possible. But what if it was?

There are a few brands that create a story behind their pieces, delivering timeless luxury essentials season after season. Brands that collections which are elegant, graceful and seductive, yet simple and understated – allowing the details of the craftsmanship to speak volumes at just a glance.

These are the brands worth investing in. The brands that bring effortless sophistication to our fingertips, allowing us to drip in grace without even trying. The brands we reach for every morning when we want to look and feel our best – for owning the streets in powerful confidence.

Once such brand, Anne Fontaine. Delivering workwear classics and drool-worthy street style ensembles, Anne Fontaine was made for the woman who exudes feminine confidence.

You probably already know their classic white button downs are quintessential to any minimalist’s wardrobe.

The high quality poplin and sophisticated silhouettes make Anne Fontaine’s white shirts a staple that can be styled so many ways.

Yet, their collection goes far beyond their must-have white shirts. Rich victorian lace, delicate brocades, minimalist knitwear and tailored suiting complete the Anne Fontaine collection of workwear and high glamour collections.

Anne Fontaine pieces are rooted in timeless classics that express passion and romance in the details. The structured suiting and modern silhouettes combined with feminine lace and embellished finishing make them the ultimate go-to work wear collection when you want to exude strong, feminine style.

The looks I’ve selected this season are strongly rooted in heritage prep with a victorian edge.

This winter white ensemble is all a workwear outfit should be – elegant, timeless, and appropriate for office to evening wear. The wide leg trousers are a favorite piece in my wardrobe, part of an essential white two piece suit that works great as a set or separates.

I’ve layered a ribbed sweater vest from the new season arrivals over my very first (and frequently worn) Anne Fontaine white blouse.

Going monochrome elongates your body, and gives the whole look a fresh, crisp look that says hey, I’m here to conquer the day.

The second look is more relaxed yet tailored, as workwear should often be.

Oversized suiting plays a big role in fall and winter fashion trends, and I’d be amiss to overlook the styling in a workwear editorial.

This sweater vest has become a winter staple layering piece. The slouchy shoulders and deep V make it great over white shirts, under blazers, and even over tee’s for an off-duty look.

With a wardrobe of several blazers, it’s not easy for even luxury brands to claim a spot in my wardrobe. This piece has become a new favorite. The oversized frame makes it flattering both with suiting, as well as an outerwear layer over cocktail attire. The subtle print on the trim and lapel give it just enough texture to be interesting, without becoming overpowering.

Clothing can’t buy you confidence, but the right pieces can make you feel it all the more.

Looking to up your workwear game? Check out my collaboration with Anne Fontaine for their On The Job campaign, highlighting some of the most relevant, key pieces for a professional’s wardrobe. Or, you can browse all my top selects of curated workwear at Anne Fontaine

living lighter with less

’Til 2022, a deep desire for “less” has continued to well up in my being.

Perhaps partially driven by a complex, heavy world around us. Simplicity is uncomplicated peace, and excess is no more than baggage. I’ve applied this not only to a more capsule approach to my wardrobe, but throughout my home and life as well.

It’s become easier and easier to let go of the baggage that builds up with time, and more and more rewarding as the piles of unneeded disappear leaving more time to kick back and enjoy what you have. Not only in things which are material, but also in matters of the mind.

We are a generation of over thinkers. Of excess, and emotional weights we carry with us throughout our lives. It’s a new year, and it’s time to eliminate and reduce baggage – physically, mentally and emotionally.

The cause and effect is simple, with less, we are lighter.

With less burdens, we can stand up straighter. We become free to pursue what makes us truly happy without anything holding us down.

If you’re feeling heavy, reflect on the year past. Recognize your Demonds and the things that have weighed you down, and get rid of them.

It’s time to start living lighter, and happier with less.

Live more, with less. Be the first to love, and to forgive. Remember each moment is all, and only what we make of it. It’s 2022, and though one never needs a reason to start new, now is as good a time as any.

Having a career and fashion as well as managing a fashion blog, for myself an overstocked wardrobe is a weighted battle I fight season after season.

You might not think a stocked wardrobe is something that weighs you down, but try considering a full closet and racks of clothing in nearly every room of your home. Though I frequently donate or sell gently used clothes, there’s definitely some baggage I’m looking forward to letting go of in 2022.

I’ve shared some tips on how to reduce your closet to a more capsule wardrobe, many of which I’ll be following in the upcoming weeks to rid myself of some excess.

In the meantime, combining homes with my husband has taught me new levels of versatility in managing a home with less.

Namely, “shopping” in his wardrobe. An added tip for a more capsule wardrobe in 2022, discover the pieces you can share with your partner (if they’re open). You may be surprised just how many of your items overlap.

Genderless fashion is in, as is oversized fashion – and I’ve found many of the guy’s pieces have a better relaxed look than deliberately oversized items for women.

I’ve since discovered new favorite boxy tees, oversized sweatshirts, button downs, and even this blazer which can be easily “stolen” from his, to help reduce needs in my own wardrobe. Not to mention, many of the items are higher priced essentials, so you can save by being versatile with what you have as well.

And while coordinating oversized blazer outfits may not cure all of 2022’s weightless goals, it’s one place to start. Hello 2022, a year of living with less. I feel a little lighter already.

’tis the season, a tragic love story

It’s here. That cold that licks your bones and laughs as the deep chill spreads like liquid nitrogen through your veins. The warm glow from the holidays disappears like a candle being snuffed out, leaving nothing but darkness in its wake.

And, though the earth’s orbit tells us daylight has just begun to extend itself once again – Us creatures of the sun know now begins the longest days of the year.

The frost has burned itself onto every surface, and the living seek refuge underground where a hint of earth’s warm heart can still be felt.

And now, there’s no escape. We are trapped here, with borders closed and restrictions barring us from warmer refuge. Where will we run to now?

Home. They say home is where the heart is, but mine longs for rays of sun penetrating my icy cold flesh with heat rays of welcome embrace. I long for the sea and the sounds of birds and dancing trees.

The elements are unchanged. The air is still here, but the warm breeze has changed to biting winds that cut like glass. The earth is still here, but it’s frozen, covered in death rather than bursting with new life.

You have betrayed me, my love. As you do every year. Yet I wait for you to return like a tragic love story.

Days pass. Still I wait. I seek other comforts, but there is none like yours. Huddled by the fire in the darkness, I wait.

Return to me summer, my love. Don’t leave me here for so long. I miss your touch on my skin. The sound of the life you bring. Your smell. Your light. Your warmth that penetrates my soul.

Yet, there is hope, for I know you will return. And though you leave me again and again, I will welcome you with open arms. I will run to you, and forget you ever left, as you change places with winter once more.

preppy or minimalist, loafers are the new footwear essentials

Love it or hate it, if fashion is your thing, you already know chunky loafers are the minimalist must-have shoes of the season. This confident 90’s it girl style made a huge comeback in 2021, being paired with minimalist and preppy outfits alike.

image cred (and one of my favorite bloggers @jacquiealexander

The good news, if you’re late on the trend, it’s not too late to grab a pair. Loafers are going to be around for a while, forecasted to continue through next year after being spotted littering the 2022 spring runways.

photography:JOEL CORSON | camera:CANNON 5D MARK III | loafers c/o:NATURALIZER

Why we love them? While sneakers have made their debut the past several seasons as the comfortable essential while working from home, it’s feeling like time to mix it up a bit.

We’re back in the office, and we’re having fun dressing for the occasion once again. That being said, we’ve gotten a little spoiled being in our comfies 24/7.

Loafers offer the perfect solution – a tailored style that can be worn with casual minimalist office essentials, or dressed up true to the 90’s for those re-embracing fashion with open arms.

And, if you’re lucky enough to grab a pair as comfy as these loafers by Naturalizer, you won’t even think of missing your sneakers a couple days a week.

Feeling a little early to revert back to middle school so soon? It’s true, 90’s and 2000’s fashion has made one of the fastest comebacks in fashion history – you can thank social media for that one.

But, before you start feeling all social-toxic (trust me, I’m right there with you), loafers are a not-so-fashion fashion trend that have now proven their wings through the past few seasons.

In a world of excess, there are many like myself who desire less. We waste. A lot. Which makes our buying decisions more important than ever.

If you want to avoid fashion fashion, invest in your essentials, and avoid the neon cheetah print you spotted 3 times last week on TikTok.

Like the classic blazer, tailored trousers and your favorite pair of white court sneakers, loafers can be paired in different ways with a wide array outfits. They’re also appropriate for just about any season, maximizing your wear time.

Tack on the all-day comfort and loafers (and your fav sneakers) just might be one of the most versatile, essential shoes on the market today.

image cred: Pinterest

But just how do you style loafers? If you’re looking for outfit ideas, I’ve created a mood board with several loafer outfits you can check out for inspo. But the truth is, you can wear them with just about anything.

image cred: Pinterest

For the best loafer outfits, pair them with your suiting and blazers for everyday office wear. Or, if you’re big on the 90’s prep style, you can find hundreds of preppy outfit ideas here.

For this post, I’ve styled my loafers two ways (both preppy and minimalist) to help illustrate just how versatile this style is. While I’m a sucker for a pleated mini skirt and socks, I’ll likely save this look for outings closer to early spring.

Want to start wearing loafers now? Pair them with your minimalist essentials for an off-duty look that exudes confidence in casual comfort. Loose fit khaki’s and an oversized button down are an effortless combo for office wear and errands.

Or, match them up with your favorite denim and a blazer for a go-to style you can remix in your wardrobe every day of the week.

Looking for the perfect pair? I received the Agnes Loafer in two color ways from Naturalizer just a few weeks back, and have already incorporated them into multiple outfits for office and outings.

The black patent loafer is a staple, and the shine makes them even easier to dress up. I’ve worn them just as featured in this post, as well as with a black skirt suit and white ankle socks for a dressier look.

The zebra print loafer is a fun pattern for days you feel like walking on the wild side (wild for loafers that is). While the featured look is very stylized with a Chanel cardigan, you can also make prints more subtle when paired with basics.

They’re both great styles to pair with your skinnies and a blazer for an effortless look you don’t have to think about when you’re running late to the office.

Worth noting for review, they may just be the most comfortable shoes I own. I’m not quite sure what magic they sew into the lining, but it feels like pillows all the way around your feet.

The subtle lug sole gives you about an inch boost in height, and gives you the volume needed to balance out some of your more wide-leg trousers.

If you want to shop the look, I’ve copied the link below – now on sale for under $100.

imagine a world, and resolve to make it so

We should reinvent ourselves not only everyday, but in every moment. When we cling to an idea of who we think we are, it’s then we get stuck, when we can’t compromise, and often when we’re too blinded by ourselves to really see each moment for what it is.

But, it’s not so easy to be ever conscious in every waking moment. As such, each year I try to re-evaluate who I am, who I want to be, and areas I feel the need for growth. This becomes a sort of loose framework that helps to guide the consciousness in those moments you do find time to pause.

In years past, I have sought to simplify, to let go of the pursuit of perfection, and to strive for progress

2021 has been a strange year. One I cannot begin to know how to describe. It wreaked havoc on our lives. It taught us how to be more self reliant and prepared. It made us question our way of life, and it changed the way we worked and our lives at home. It challenged us to find ourselves, in a more quite space. I have never wished away a year – time is too precious.  Yet, I’m ready for the chapter ahead.

This year’s resolution is for a world that’s still shaken. One with growing chaos and unrest. One where… people haven’t fully recovered. It’s one I will fail daily, but feel strongly if we all try, the world (and our own personal lives) will truly be a better place.

“Leave each person,
and each place
better than you found it.”

Imagine a world where instead of leaving our mess behind, we take the time to clean up someone else’s. Instead of taking out our worries or impatience on those around us, we dissolve negative thinking, and find ways to give the gift of happiness.

Imagine a home where we’ve improved our space of living everyday, and can enjoy our weekend to rest and reset before each new week begins.

Imagine having the power to deflect the overwhelming negativity in this world, by making each personal encounter a positive one. Imagine starting new, and better, everyday.

We’re all busy. And we can’t do everything. We can’t control the world, or reset the direction it’s spinning. But we do have control over one thing – ourselves. And you’d be surprised just how powerful you really are.

I pray you feel inspired to see today differently. To make small, incremental changes in the world around you to make your day, your life, and the world around you a better place.

I hope you share your light, in a world of darkness. And I hope you get to witness just how much brighter your light can shine.
