Are you prepared for one of the most daring fall fashion trends? Vinyl hit all over the runways in 2017, and now it’s hit our wardrobes, hard. From vinyl pants to shoes, skirts, coats – you name it. This trend is all about being slick and devilishly sexy. As a fashion blogger leaning towards the darker side of luxury, this trend was spot on for my taste, so here’s the rundown on all things vinyl in fashion that’s happening now.
What is vinyl, and what should I wear it with?
Vinyl in fashion has many names, including patent leather or PU. Basically, it’s a synthetic material made to look like glossy leather or plastic. The slick sheen does wonders to emphasis curves, so make sure you’re wearing it where you want the focus to go. I’m wearing a pair of Vinyl pants from David Lerner to illustrate the trend in this post. Their preferred terminology – vinyl (I guess that’s why we get along so well). Crafted with a mix of polyester and polyurethane, they definitely represent a key fashion brand in-sync with the trend. I’m also wearing vinyl shoes from Shoes of Prey – a website that let’s you design your own shoes in the material you choose. So you can see how the trend transpires throughout all manner of wardrobe pieces.
You can combine multiple vinyl pieces like I’ve done, or wear them independently as a statement piece. Accessories should be simple – your shining vinyl says enough.
Who’s wearing it
Everyone. Ok not everyone. This trend is a bit edgy for some. With an association with the “bad girls,” vinyl has gotten a sort of risqué reputation over the years. But if you’re up for a few heads turned, it’s definitely a fashion trend you won’t want to miss. Many of the A-list celebrities have been spotted sporting vinyl fashion including the Kardashian clan (I know you’re not surprised on this one), Rihanna, Bella and Gigi Hadid, and more. Also on top of this glossy fashion trend are leading fashion bloggers (including myself) like The Haute Pursuit, Modern Legacy and more. In fact, if you’re a regular on Instagram, you probably can’t scroll through your feed without spotting some representation of vinyl in fashion.
Who’s talking about it
Harper’s Bazzar, Vogue, and Refinery29 are just a few of the big-name publications with a lot to say about vinyl. Why? Not only is everyone wearing it, the biggest names in fashion and top fashion designers are all on the trend.
“Chung’s wardrobe confession only made the presence of vinyl-esque leather over the course of Fashion Month all the more apparent: We saw the shiny fabric appear in various shapes and forms — trenches, trousers, and boots, in all their glossy, ’80s glory. Despite the images to come out of street style slideshows over the past few weeks, patent is actually a relatively realistic (and reasonably comfortable) alternative to denim and other casual wear.” – Refinery29
Where to get it
You would probably require a blindfold not to spot vinyl fashion in a few of your favorite stores. Forever21, Zara and Mango all have low-price pieces if you just want to experiment with the trend. But if you want something that’s not quite so disposable, definitely search for higher-quality pieces if you want to avoid punching holes in the material early on. This pair of vinyl leggings is one I received from David Lerner – and probably my new favorite pant in my fall wardrobe.
David Lerner is a great resource for quality work-to-play basics, but especially slay in the leggings division. This pair hugs my curves like “woah,” and with a straighter physique, that’s not a benefit I take lightly. The crop is also from their basics store, and the length is a perfect match for some vinyl action in all the right places. They have more than a few choices for vinyl and vegan leather leggings, so if you want to incorporate this current fashion trend into your wardrobe, I highly recommend starting there.
