Stutterheim rain boots review: functionality never looked so much like fashion

Have an eye for fashion but a utilitarian at heart? Stutterheim delivers a collection of rubber rain boots and jackets that combine clean, minimalist style with real-life functionality.

If your abode sees rain or snow, or if you traverse to places that do; if you often traverse outdoors, or trod on city streets; rain boots are an essential most of us require at some point in life.

Why settle for a pair of boots that functions when you have the choice to find a pair that speaks to you beyond basic operation?

I’ve long since been a fan of Stutterheim, having first tried their rain jackets several years back. Remembering the modern aesthetic and functionality of design and materials, their rain boots immediately came to mind. This season, I’ve had the privilege to experience a pair of Stutterheim rain boots myself.

Initially drawn to the classic Chelsea boot silhouette and modern toothy color block sole of Stutterheim rain boots, I’ve also found myself in need of a pair of rubber boots for life on a blueberry farm. Before making a rushed purchase, I have learned to consider my fashion investments across a range of angles from fashion to functionality.

Stutterheim checked all the boxes:

  • Timeless Chelsea boot silhouette
  • Waterproof (and mud-proof) materials and design
  • Easy to slip-on and off
  • Doesn’t rub at the ankle (many a Chelsea boot died for this)
  • High traction soles for grip off road
  • Modern, minimalist fashion aesthetic (a total bonus)

Here’s a review of the fashion and the function behind Stutterheim boots, how I’ve styled them, and if they held up to the real-life wear test.

Stutterheim rain boots design

  • Classic Chelsea silhouette
  • Embossed waterproof rubber
  • Volume lug sole with low platform for fashion + function
  • Variety of color block mudguard combinations

What I love the most about Stutterheim is that their fashion goes beyond the look and transcends into functionality.

First off, that lug sole. Volume is in, and the Chelsea Rainwalker Stutterheim rain boots have just enough lug and low platform to make them equally fashionable and functional. Not too high to be a burden, not too low to be boring. The exaggerated lug tooth sole gives the boots a little edge, and the bold (yet not too bold) logo at the heel boasts a little worthy pride in the brand.

There are currently several variations of the sole, so you can pick one that best suits your lifestyle: classic tonal black, minimalist off-white, sporty grey, and earthy green (my choice) – plus several more when you click into the details of the boots.

The Chelsea silhouette exudes timeless European and American style. Stutterheim used a tight knit gore with a good amount of stretch, making the boots easy to slip on and off.

These boots are comfortable.

Contrary to many a Chelsea boot that I’ve tried, they don’t rub at the ankle. This has been the death of many a Chelsea boot for me, so it was already winning on that account.

The finish has a subtle embossed texture, reminiscent of leather, with a classic criss-cross rubber emboss on the sole.

How to style Stutterheim rain boots

The style is completely versatile, and pairs well as a rain boot or as a replacement to a leather Chelsea boot. You can wear them in countless ways, but here are a few of my favorite styled pairings:

  • Crop mid-width bottoms with boxy utility tops like button downs, jackets or cargo shirts
  • Coordinated athleisure outfits like sweatshirts and sweat shorts or sweatpants
  • Wide leg pants and oversized tops like boxy tees and raincoats
  • Utilitarian workwear like cargo pants or leggings and denim jackets or flannel for outdoor activities

For this look, I’ve paired with A look that illustrates the transcendence of style + versatility. A tonal leatherette cargo shirt and athletic shorts are a good go-to for style and functionality. While the material of this lends itself to be more on the fashion side of things, a cargo shirt and shorts in a sturdier material like fleece or denim would make this look equally functional.

The ugly truth is, we often invest more in frivolous fashion over the functional pieces that we actually wear in our everyday lives. Don’t buy beautiful fashion to let it sit in your wardrobe. Understand your lifestyle, and invest in pieces that work for you.

For this review, my Stutterheim rain boots faced a test for this review: life on a blueberry farm in early spring. Facing inches of loosened dirt, thorny vines, climbing over rocks and stubble, and chasing two under two… Stutterheim withstood its first wear test.

A few things I noticed during my first day outdoors

The rubber sides of the boots are pretty thin as compared to my previous pair of rain boots. These aren’t steel toe work boots – Stutterheim is a fashion + function lifestyle brand. The good news is, the thinner rubber makes the boots super flexible and lightweight, while still being strong enough that they showed no signs of failing after their first day of heavier wear.

The boots stayed comfortable for the duration of the wear test. No rubbing or discomfort, and the durable lug sole provided ample stability for treading rough ground.

After a day in the dust, I washed them with a dish sponge in the utility sink, not being so careful to avoid the gore. After a brief scrub, the inside of the boots remained clean and dry – a successful waterproof test.

All in all, I’m looking forward to making the Chelsea Rainwalker boots by Stutterheim my go-to slip-on boots for mucky outdoor activities, and washing them for a cool street style I can wear out.

Cheers Stutterheim, for achieving fashion + functionality in a cool street style boot that will carry me through the season.
