Spotting oversize sweaters everywhere? We’re not talking about loose or slightly baggy sweaters. We’re talking about huge, body-swallowing sweater styles remixed into some really original looks. It’s officially sweater weather, and winter fashion 2017 is updating the trend with a casual update on this season’s favorite staple, sweaters.
Wearing a sweater just got more fun
If you’re like me, your closet is literally bursting at the seams with thick, chunky knits wadded up on shelves and hangers alike. So cozy, so warm, what’s not to love? This year, your favorite staples are being worn with a twist, with the rise of oversized sweater style taking over the street style terrain. Check out some of my favorite fashion blockers rocking the trend! You’ll notice in the below ootd inspo, each oversized sweater outfit is centralized on the cozy, comfort factor of the knit. Everything else is secondary.

How to wear oversized sweaters
To master cute oversized sweater outfits without looking frumpy, wear them with something fitted on your bottom half. Skinny jeans or leather leggings are a perfect match. You can also add some shape to your upper body by throwing a cross body bag over the knit, which will pull the sweater tighter over the front and across you back. Still feeling to swallowed up? Wear it with a skin-baring mini skirt for an extra edge.
If you dare to bend rules, rock it full-force with a pleated midi skirt that’s oh so street style approved. To rock an oversized sweater outfit with a skirt, look for a knit that’s loose at the bottom. If the sweater is too tight at the bottom, you’ll be looking like a mermaid wrapped in your grandmas afghan. And that’s not good. Having the sweater looser at the bottom allows your skirt to flow freely, creating a relaxed, feminine look.
My oversized sweater style
For this look, I’m wearing an oversize sweater from Grana, paired over a shirtdress for an all-over-loose, casual style. Though the sweater is already made to have a relaxed fit, I ordered it a size larger to achieve that truly dramatic, oversized sweater style. The great thing about this trend? You can borrow from the boys, since the bigger the sweater, the better. If you’re living somewhere chilly, pair the look with boots to help balance your bare legs, and you can keep rocking this trend until the snow sets in.
Great styling tips!

Love the idea of an oversized sweater with a crossbody bag. I’m petite, and while I love oversized sweaters, I often feel like a little girl playing dress up. I will definitely give the crossbody idea a try!
