5 tips on how to wear the pj trend without looking like you just rolled out of bed

The pajama trend, so in. Looking like you just rolled out of bed – so not. So what gives? The queens of streetstyle somehow pull the trend off flawlessly, looking effortlessly chic. Then you try it at home and look like you haven’t slept in weeks and just didn’t muster up enough motivation to make yourself presentable today. So why do we keep trying? It just looks sooo comfortable. I mean – who wouldn’t want to walk around in silky trousers and a blouse while exuding unparalleled confidence and elegance in the complete comfort of your bedroom wear.

If you’re lucky enough to possess the perfect posture and body frame to pull this off without trying – that makes one of us. If you’re like me and somewhere on middle ground, the good news is there’s hope. While I’m not promising everyone can pull the look off, here are a few fashion tips I’ve found make all the difference, and just might be enough to get you kickstarted on joining the trend. To help me illustrate the trend, I’ve partnered with David Lerner to share a couple pieces of their winter collection, which brings me to my first point…

#1: Choose quality pieces

If you’re digging in your existing pj drawer to find the perfect blouse to wear out for your first attempt of the trend – you’re doomed for failure. If you weren’t wearing them out before, now is not the time to start. Opt for high-quality silk or cotton pieces that are wrinkle and wear-free and show no visible signs of aging. These are sleepwear symptoms, and won’t have you looking or feeling chic. David Lerner is a brand I’ve worked with before, and I truly love their pieces for the high quality standards of each piece I’ve had the opportunity to wear. This pinstripe silk blouse and flair pant were love at first sight. And after putting them on, I love them even more. They have a loose, flattering fit that elongate the body for elegant daytime wear. They’re also quite versatile, and I’ve played with matching the pant with lose sweaters and the blouse with basically anything.

#2: Wear heels

Let’s be comfortable, but not too comfortable. Wearing loafers or sandals with your pj ensemble are going to be one more sign of night-wear. Instead, pair them with a cute pair of heels to dress up your look and add a re-assuring factor that you are indeed dressed for the day. I choose these silver mules from Lulu’s to add a bit of shine to up the dress-factor.

#3: Accessorize

Since you don’t typically wear them to bed, accessories are a great way to dress up your pj look, and are the defining factor on pulling off the pajama trend. That doesn’t mean you have to go overboard. The pj look is semi-casual after all. I’ve added a classic, bold timepiece by Lilienthal Berlin to make my pj look more office appropriate. Lilienthal Berlin manufactures timepieces in Germany with focus on sustainable production practices. The lines are invariably relaxed and industrial chic with a lot of attention to detail. The frames are matt-finished stainless steal that add a subtle sheen. They offer two sizes so you can choose a face that best fits your look. I chose the large face in silver and white for this look since I wanted to draw some attention to the accessory details. You can see the subtle difference of the large silver face vs. the small gold version also in my collection.

#4: Pull your look together

Today is not the day to skip brushing your hair and wearing mascara. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge supporter of going all natural when it comes to beauty. However, unless you’re going for “I woke up like this” don’t cut corners in your morning routine when trying to pull off the pj trend. I’ve worn my hair back with a bold red lip for yet another “this is not my nightwear” statement.

#5: Be confident

Last but not least, as with all new, bold trends – the most important element is your confidence in strutting it around. Fashion is fun, and staying up on the latest fashion trends is exciting. There are no rules, and one can feel free to express their individuality with their own unique looks. However if you’re not comfortable, it’s going to show. Be yourself. The pajama fashion trend isn’t for everyone – and that’s ok. But if you are going to join in, be confident. If you feel amazing, you’ll look amazing, and no one should ever tell you otherwise.
