Good morning friends. Sipping on my first cup of coffee and kicking off the weekend with some fashion tips on how to wear summer boots. Yes – I know it’s not summer yet. But it’s right around the corner, and for those of you who don’t want to live in flip-flops for the next 8 months, listen up. For starters, whoever invented flip-flops is really getting on my nerves.
I’m not saying theres not a nice pair out there… somewhere… maybe. But seriously? Neon pink plastic and some cheap floral foam sole? You can do better. Don’t even get me started on Old Navy $2 steals. Let’s be real… you know they’re awful.
So why are so many people die-hard fans? Perhaps their easy? Cheap? To be honest, the reasoning evades me. But sometimes the alternative to sandals in the summer really can be a bit of a struggle to make things looked balanced with the lighter summer attire and closed up styles. And while boots aren’t a completely new trend in the warmer months in the fashion world, some alternatives to the standard black western bootie with a flowing dress are out there too! Here are 3 ways to wear summer boots, and tips how to make them blend with your summer wardrobe.
Tip #1: Wear Loose Clothing
You know, the kind that makes you want to move. Loose clothing allows for some space down at the ankles – and framing the boots with a wider leg takes the heaviness out of a closed toe boot or bootie. On the mark for summer style, it’s the perfect opportunity to take advantage of those culottes and jumpers that you just can’t find the right match for. The look is tailored and sleek without being overly masculine. Perfect for girl’s night out to that martini bar that just opened down the road. The pair I wear: these white ankle boots from Public Desire.
Not sure about wide-leg pants? Going loose is generally good advise regardless for wearing boots with summer style. You’ll notice in the following looks the same rule is applied – but in completely different looks. So let’s move on to what we’ve really all been waiting all winter to wear – stem-showing summer dresses. Which brings us to the next tip…
Tip #2: Wear Light Colors
Not saying you can’t wear black in the summer (trust me I do), but when you’re opting for an already-heavier look – it might be a good time to explore the lighter side of your wardrobe. For a minimalist wardrobe consisting of only a few colors (what do you mean no black??) it’s a good opportunity to try something new. And common – there really isn’t anything scary about whites and nudes. People often ask me how I keep them clean… I don’t sit in the dirt. Trust me, it’s not hard. Places to avoid white: Ballparks, camping, and the NYC subway (I learned that last one the hard way).
But it doesn’t have to be white, think pastels and soft tones: nude, blush, champaign, grey, lavender – have fun! These lucite heel boots combine a pre-mixed color palette of fleshy tones that are great for those of you wanting to wear boots while still lengthening that natural leg line.
Following just one these tips may be enough in and of itself, but for sake of best illustration – I have incorporated all three into each look to best capture the basic elements of easy combinations that you can easily find in your wardrobe. So here’s the last tip of the morning to ya (and the most fun) for how to wear summer boots…
Tip #3: Don’t be Afraid to Show Some Skin
No, I’m not telling you to slut it up. We’re not going for the “Pretty Woman” look today. But layering up too much will again give you a sort of heavy look – the opposite of what one wants for summer season. Instead, show a bit of skin. Weather a leggy dress, or opened up top – keep it light and airy and promote that summer tan somewhere on your body. (If you need it as much as I do, you won’t pass up the chance).
This particular day was overcast but not chilly, so legs it was with a high-slit shirtdress – and cozied down a bit with a lightweight knit to keep it casual. Sort of an off-duty vibe when combined with these suede booties.
So there you have it… Think you can’t wear boots in the summer, think again. With traveling so much to the city, open sandal styles are sometimes just not an option for me – so this is a look I spend a lot of time working around. And for those of you skimmers out there (guilty as charged) here’s the recap.
3 Tips on How to Wear Summer Boots: wear loose clothing (think jumpers, dresses and culottes), wear light colors (blush, nude, champaign, grey), and show some skin (you sexy beast).
Thank you Public Desire for stocking my wardrobe for the season, summer – here we come.
